For the past few weeks, we have been focusing on homes designed with two owner’s suites and the possible living situations that might warrant dual-suites. This week we’re going to focus on multiple owner’s suites and why you might consider this design concept. Not only for special living situations, but also for long-term or even resale value.
Many parents of college students feel that even with student loan repayment, their children should learn the economic realities of housing and rent. If enrolled locally, the bedroom suite can be a less expensive option over dorm life. Or, a recent graduate could move back home, softening the blow of post-graduation costs.
A growing trend is ‘aging in place’ whereby seniors are opting to stay in their own home rather than move into an assisted living facility. The CDC defines aging in place as, “The ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”
The owner’s suite is your sanctuary, the ‘best’ bedroom in the house. But, how well is the space being utilized? Do you find that even though it’s a larger area, there isn’t enough room for everything?
Whether new construction or remodeling, dual owner’s suites and independent in-law suites are increasingly in demand. Interestingly, about the time their kids move out, a significant number of homeowners find themselves moving a parent in.
Not only are homes designed with dual owner’s suites being used for sharing a home, the home owners are “sharing” the space themselves! It might amaze you to find out just how many committed, happy couples choose not to share the same bedroom.
As our series on ‘Study of Home: Special Places’ comes to a close with this week’s post, I am a bit surprised! Through helping my parents build their house years ago I knew there were a lot of decisions to make, like bedroom/bathroom placement, open floor plan, etc., but at the time I never really thought about the “why”?
In contrast to last week’s “Special Places to Gather,” we also need places to Get Away. Our hectic lifestyles are refreshed by ‘get-away’ rooms such as dens, sitting rooms, and sunrooms, which allow us to take “mini-vacations,” or escape for brief retreats without leaving home.
Special places to gather are what makes a house a home; otherwise, families are essentially just cohabitating, which makes their home a place for eating and sleeping. Gathering places don’t have to be elaborate or defined – even if it’s just at the breakfast bar for a quick meal – being together is what makes you feel connected.
What does the term ‘play’ mean to you? Oftentimes when designing a home for a family we automatically think of a playroom for the children. But, a room for ‘play’ can take on a different meaning – think a hobby room for sewing, scrapbooking, or jewelry making, or a fitness center.
